The artifact belongs to the Daedric Prince Malacath, patron saint of the orcs and also the god of the spurned and the ostracized. It's perfect for brutes with no regard for subtleties. The Volendrung is one of the most baddass warhammers in Skyrim and it's ugly and large. They only assume either male or female aspects when dealing with mere mortals.
